Gurus, what should I look for in a sewing machine

Hi, this is a question for the gurus, probably Alison or maybe Brian. I want to learn how to sew this summer and i was wondering what kind of sewing machine I should get. I probably can't afford anything real fancy or digital, i just want a basic sturdy machine that will last me a few years. What should I be looking for or what questions should I ask the salespeople? I love the lightup bookcover, maybe I can make one of those when I get good! Thanks.
