FiOS Dropping Video Frames? (definition?)

Remav

I need a Video Guru to help me define my FiOS video problem.

I very often see "glitches" in both SD and HD content. The Audio is not affected, and pixilation is not an issue. I try to describe this to the Technicians as "Dropped Video Frames" and in my estimation when this happens I see anywhere from 1 to 5 video frames "missing" so that the picture "Jumps ahead". Is this a familiar known problem that has a more correct term that I would be better off using? ...and if so, by chance is it possible that some people's eyes are "slow" and they wouldn't even notice it?

I've had responses from FiOS Techs and my friends that run the entire gammut from not being able to see it to agreeing with me that the video is "barely watchable".

Here's the "short list" of things that have been replaced:
5 HD TVs
4 STBs
3 ONTs
3 Routers
2 Battery Boxes
2 Fiber Line Drops from the street
Multiple Coax links.

A friend just had FiOS installed up the road about 1 mile from me & his video has the same problem.

I didn't have this issue with my last HD provider & HD movies that I play do not have this issue.

Thanks to anyone who is able to at least tell me what the "official" term would be, and HUGE thanks to anyone who can suggest a way to fix it.

Hello and welcome, Remav.

Sorry to hear about the problems you're having! I'm no tech expert or anything, but when I was first reading your post the term "compression artifact" popped into my head (mostly because it's one of the tech terms I'm actually familiar with) -- have you described it to anyone in this way yet?

The more I think about it, though, I'm not exactly sure if this is the correct name for what's happening -- I think compression artifacts are more like pixels/squares that sort of freeze up on your screen, not whole frames that are dropped. (Plus I think compression artifacts are more an issue with cable, since they compress the signal much more than FiOS does.)

I'll try my best to find some more info for you, Remav, but in the mean time, if anyone else has any ideas, please chime in!

Hi. Sorry to hear about your problems. I had the same exact issue and , you are correct, some people could not really see it. I actually work for verizon and I was having it in a demonstration center that I run. This happen when it was first hooked up. With me it had nothing to do with the actually Fios. All I did was replace the HDMI cable and it was fine. Yes it was just the cable. I spend $100 on a really good one too. Im guessing it was just a bad cable from the start.
It is a very uncommon problem and like you said, some people can't even see it. But try that. From your list it seems like you have not replaced it yet. If thats not it I will try to figure it out. the only other thing it really could be is if you have too many tv's and they are all very far from the ONT, you would have to have a very big house for this. Good luck.....Dan
