? for hosts about wifi password

Hi! I saw your show and the Q&A's with the hosts so I hope you can answer my question please.

I have a wireless router by Linksys-G that I've had a few years but I dont' use a password for it anymore (I wasn't able to get online at all before and it seems like this is the only way it will work. I reinstalled the CD a bunch of times and I can't get it to work with the encryption.)

My question is, am I in a real security risk by not having it encrypted? I know my neighbors can use my wifi to get online now and that doesn't bother me. But would they be able to get into my computer now, or can they get my CC# if I buy something online? I have a firewall and anti-virus installed too. Should I just buy a different router?

Thanks for your time. :)

The short answer is yes it gives people a leg up on getting into your PC. In all odds you proably dont have much to worry about but it is worth setting up the secuirty measures. If you dont know the password you can reset the router by pushing in the button with a Pin (on the back side of the router) Most likely your user name and password is. Even if you only setup MAC adderss filtering its worth it.

Admin admin
admin password

IF those dont work just google the default passwords for your modle router.

Yes thanks tsunamiii! I have tried the trick with the pin before and gone through the install CD again but the encrypt didn't work. I haven't tried googleing the default password though, thanks for that tip.

Here is a link to a page with the default passwords

http://www.cirt.net/cgi-bin/

That should get you in. Most of the G bad routers use No user ID and the password is "admin".. Good Luck :)

and thanks Jim, I figure I support thousands of servers what is a few end users to add to the list :)
