Wii sensor tweaked to create 3D gaming

Jonny Lee, a Human-Computer Interaction student at Carnegie Mellon, has created a prototype for a 3D gaming environment, using the sensor and remote from a Wii. The (seemingly) simple and elegant key to doing this is by keeping the Wii remote stationary and moving the usually-fixed sensor bar around instead.

Words really can't do justice to how cool this is, just check out the video:

Sure beats those old red-and-blue glasses, huh? Although Lee says the 3D POV can only work for one player at a time, I bet if a system like this were implemented on a mass scale eventually, you'd be able to play with other people online.

If you're really technically inclined, you actually can download that 3D environment and configure your computer and Wii accessories to try this out yourself:

If any industrious programmer-types try this at home, let us know how it turned out!

That is awesome.
I need to plug in with head tracking!

I was playing Wii Tennis with two other friends the other day, and I was on both teams, and I thought that was weird. But this tops the cake!

Yeah, isn't that amazing? I bet you could do all kinds of cool stuff with that setup, and the basic tools are from a regular gaming console you can get for a couple hundred bucks (if you can find one, that is.)

By the way...did you win your tennis match the other day, Lloyd? ;)

I lost the game... :?:
(classic case of the glass being happy empty or half full?)

haha. Forgive my nerdy humor.

To be honest with you Jim, I suck at Wii Tennis. I've been beaten every time I've played it. But I tell you what...When I develop my first wii/ps3 cross-platform hybrid game, I will be #1! (Imagine it, the sweet grafix of the ps3 combined with the wiimote interface...and they are both open source platforms!)

In the mean time, your just gonna have to play MoodSwings!

Wii + PS3...now that would be awesome!

I've discovered I'm actually halfway decent at Wii Tennis, although it does tend to bring out my competitive side a bit too much...the other day I actually got tennis elbow from playing it. Pretty sad, I know. And don't get me started on the sweat-fest that is Wii Boxing....

Maybe I will switch to MoodSwings -- seems much less injurious to play.
