2.0 Family plays together, stays together

What do YOU think the Techno-Gurus should create for The Porters' technology home makeover? Get to know our new 2.0 Family below, and leave a comment!

When you've got five kids -- each with their own schoolwork, clubs and sports -- running a household is a challenge on a good day. When you're trying to coordinate that many schedules on a veritable patchwork quilt of hand-scrawled pages and sticky notes, it's practically a miracle.

Such is life for the hectic-but-happy Porter family of Fort Wayne, Indiana -- Melinda and Kent, and their children Jonny (16)Tommy (12), twins Cece and Billy (10), and Anna (8).

The Porters truly love hanging out with each other -- playing video games and watching movies together are the primary focus of their together time. The tough part is finding free time when all seven can be together -- and their current technology (and lack thereof) is not very conducive to creating free time.

For all five schoolkids, there's just the one tired, old computer, connected to an overworked printer that always seems to be running out of ink. With the desktop system occupied almost every waking minute, Kent, a frazzled traveling salesman, sometimes even resorts to sitting in his car with his work laptop to get things done. And as if Dad weren't busy enough already, he also runs a licensed hair salon out of his basement!

Between all the gaming, haircuts, and various sports and social clubs, the Porter home has grown into a warm and inviting social hub for the whole neighborhood. All it needs is a little boost from the Techno-Gurus to take it to the next level, and in turn, give the family more free time to actually enjoy it.

So if YOU were a Guru, what would you do?

Brian, don't scare this poor family away already. They look like fun. And I might be in need of a haircut by the time we shoot!

I think Aleasa has the right idea -- that old computer definitely isn't cutting it. And there's got to be a better way to manage the family's activities than that hand-written calendar, right?

    If I were a Guru,
I would transform their house into a house made of Laffy Taffy, Gummy Bears, Oreos, Lemon Heads, and Skittles. Then I would eat it all, and the Porter's will say "Those Guru's ate us out of house and home!"

Wow! I can't think of a family that could deserve a makeover more! Imagine how a few laptops could simplify their daily lives. Most of us don't have to wait in line behind 6 other people to get to the internet. Cell fones too......so that mother Melinda can keep up with those adorable children! Best of Luck Porters! I hope they knock your sox off with technology!

"Most of us don't have to wait in line behind 6 other people to get to the internet."

Wow. When you put it like that, Margo, it really drives the point home! I know I would be a very unhappy camper if I had to wait in line every day like that.

Maybe the Gurus will at least hook them up with a nice velvet rope, to make waiting in that line a bit more classy, like an exclusive nightclub, huh! ;)

  18. Kay Royer Says:

Hi, I'm from the Royer family. Are you excited yet? We're looking forward to seeing what the gurus come up with for your family. It's going to be fun to have the whole crew here. Enjoy and dream big! Come to our block party and maybe you'll get some hints as to what they will be giving you!

Cheers Techno-Gurus for picking a great family! A famous person (me) once said, "A happy family is a networked family!" I'm thinking laptops all around (and webcam for dad for tele-conferencing) and link 'em all together cuz they are just so darn cute. And, oh ... I couldn't help but notice those large, bulky TV and PC monitors in the office and game room - here's a two-word suggestion: flat screen! Hook 'em up with a radical sound system, too, so we can hear all that game room noise in Charlotte! Here's to technology, the Porters, and the Gurus ...

  20. Jim 2.0 Says:

    Sep 05, 2008 8:40 am

Hi, Kay! That's a great idea. Maybe your two families could even form a sort of support group for each other next week -- "People Whose Homes Have Been Invaded by Gurus" (okay, the name needs work, I'll admit.) But it really will be interesting to see TWO episodes being shot simultaneously, a first for My Home 2.0! Be aware, we WILL be on the lookout for spies, though. ;)

Ray, I think your famous person's advice is definitely in line with the Gurus' thinking. In fact, I think they may even be trying to get that line inserted into fortune cookies as we speak!

  21. Lora Says:

    Sep 06, 2008 5:42 pm

Congrats Porters ! Another Hairstylist .....I hope Kent gets that thing he is describing that will bring up client messages that would be cool and then Lloyd can do a tutor session online to teach us other hairstylists how to make one for our salons....yes .. good idea !!!! :) Have fun ! We can't wait to see what the gurus do !

What a great family to chose for this makeover! I can't wait to see what you have planned for them. Smart phones for Kent and Melinda, cell phones for the kids, laptops, flat screens, webcams, an awesome game room...and especially something to replace that calender=) Give them the best...they deserve it. Melinda is the greatest!! Good luck Porter family!!!

  24. Melinda Says:

Well, tomorrow is the big day, the beginning of the makeover...I just want to thank all of you for your wonderful comments and ideas, you guys in Charlotte are awesome! I am so lucky to have such good friends and family. Thanks to all of you and I hope to see you on Sunday!!
    Love to everyone!

I grew up in that house, many years ago, and have a ton of happy memories there. We had eight children and that house has always been the "hub" for us and our friends. I am so glad for the Porters, they are truly great deserving people. I am so glad my old house is a happy house, and soon to be a high-tech happy house!!!

You guys rock, I wish I could be there for the block party, but I am "stuck here in Seattle".

  26. Dee Says:

    Sep 11, 2008 7:21 pm

Dodi, it's amazing that the house has remained the heart of social activity over the years. I'm sure the Gurus are doing some amazing (and totally happy) stuff to your old home.

  27. Jim 2.0 Says:

    Sep 12, 2008 12:07 pm

Dodi, I certainly can imagine how you'd have happy memories of here -- such a beautiful, peaceful area with lots of trees and songbirds, and a huge back yard. It's so cool to see you here, cheering the Porters on; they truly are a great family with a terrific sense of humor and fun. They're already happy with what they've got, so I imagine their smiles will be a mile wide this weekend!

And Dee, you are totally correct on the "amazing" part... ;)

Anna, if you're having as much fun as I am watching your episode, then I'd say you're doing pretty well! I can't wait for you to see it.
