Less than two weeks after getting the green light from the New York Public Service Commission, FiOS TV is now available in New York City.
Not only that, but with the immediate addition of 100 high-definition channels, FiOS TV customers in NYC now have the most HD in the country. (Indeed, counting HD video-on-demand offerings, FiOS TV customers in the Big Apple now have more than 500 HD choices at any given time.)
New Yorkers: if you want to check out the full channel lineup in your area, you can always enter your zip code at the FiOS TV site, but if you just want to check out the list of HD channels in NYC, there's also a downloadable factsheet right here.
Non-New Yorkers: Don't gnash your teeth in jealousy, please, it's very bad for your enamel. Customers in the rest of the country's FiOS service footprint will see more and more HD choices as the year progresses as well. According to Verizon senior VP Eric Rabe:
"Our year-end goal for HD programming is the same whether you live in Brookyln or Beaverton, Oregon. We’re launching new content, region by region, in each of our FiOS TV markets. Many new channels are already available in Indiana and Oregon, and the other markets will get new channels during the next few months."
So, present and future FiOS TV watchers: what HD channel(s) are YOU most excited about seeing in its full, uncompressed*, mind-blowing** glory? Leave a comment below!
*While it's true that many broadcasters compress their original signal, unlike some cable companies, Verizon does not compress the signal any further before passing it along to your home.
** Don't worry, it's just a figure of speech. But you may want to wear a helmet, just in case.
