Ever since last year's bendable-fiber breakthrough by Corning -- the glass company that makes the optical fiber comprising the FiOS network -- apartment- and condo-dwellers all over the country have been dreaming of the prospect of getting FiOS.
Verizon is currently working on another major breakthrough in its rollout to more multi-dwelling units -- making FiOS available to every neighborhood in all five boroughs of New York City by 2014.
That's a lot of optical fiber that has to be deployed from scratch, and with so many old, tall buildings in The Big Apple, you'd think running fiber to each new customer's apartment would be a major, messy hassle.
Not when you have top-notch installers like these, it's not -- check out this video posted to YouTube by VZBlogger, of a FiOS installation in a NYC building:
I've been reading and researching about fiber optics for a while now, but it's still almost hard for me to believe that all those uncompressed high-def channels, blazingly-fast Internet downloads and uploads, and crystal-clear voice service can travel to an apartment through just one of those tiny yellow fibers. (And the yellow stuff is the protective "jacket" around it -- the actual fiber is smaller than a human hair.)
Sometimes less is indeed more.
