Happy Engineer's Week!

Droppin' science, eggs, more

Feb 18, 2008

iluvengineering.jpgOk, so technically Engineer's Week began yesterday, since Sunday is the first day of the week. If you aren't familiar with Engineer's Week, it is sort of like Mardi Gras except without the beads...

Ok, so maybe it is not quite that extreme, but it is an opportunity to recognize the hard work engineers do around the world, and, for many students, discover the incredible things engineers innovate, inspire and create.

As a scientist and innovator, I embrace the latter, and find that Engineer's Week is the perfect time for me to spread the knowledge I've gained over the past year to everyone! During last year's Engineer's Week, I met one of the greatest scientist in the world, Dean Kamen. (Inventor of the Segway, and over 150 other life-altering inventions) After seeing the incredible work he was working on, I was immediately inspired to step my innovation game up!

This week I will take the opportunity to highlight some of the innovative work I've been doing, and give some insight on what's to come this year! Through my work, I hope to inspire the students, mentors, friends and family I interact with daily.

Monday - Egg Drop Competition: F = mass * gravity. Thats the fundamental equation the students need to create the winning design in this competition of the minds. Students will create containers for eggs, that must protect the egg from multiple 3-story drops. I will be hosting the event, and you can check out the live webcast at www.drexel.edu/coe/eweek2008.

Tuesday - High School Day: I will be giving presentations on the research I am doing with Music Entertainment Technology, and machine learning. "Computers Experiencing Mood Swings?" This is a continuation of the Magic Behind Sound Series I started last year, but this presentation is geared for 8-12th graders and showcasing the game I have developed. Read more here.

Wednesday - You have the Power: Energy. Energy. Energy. Its becoming one of those words we hate to love, just 'cause its so darn expensive. I'll discuss some of the innovation I've been working on, and provide some insight on the future of energy --the conservation of-- from the home to the automobile. The podcast will be aired at phillyengineers.googlepages.com.

Thursday - My Home 2.0 Forum Day: I will be plugged into the Tech Buzz discussion forum, right here on the My Home 2.0 site. Stop by and ask me a Tech question relating to anything and everything!

Friday - Give: Friday the 22nd, I will be making my way around Philadelphia to various charity organizations, to give back to the impoverished and less fortunate. This is in memory of my father who passed one year ago, and lived in such unfortunate conditions.

Thanks for your time, and if you can't physically make it to any events, your digital/spiritual presence is greatly appreciated!

Wow, sounds like you've got a busy (but fun!) week ahead of you, Lloyd.

But wait...isn't every day "My Home 2.0 Forum Day"? You mean there's a time during the week when your laptop's not plugged into the jack in the back of your head?! ;)

I guess Lloyd's secret identity cover is already blown, though, Michele. If only he'd worn glasses so we couldn't tell who it was when he took 'em off....
