Happy New Year and welcome to my new blog: The Times Are A-Changin'. Let's face it, technology just gets more sophisticated year-by-year and I want to explore some of its implications for the future.
So let me first introduce you to my hand. Take a good look. You see that bump on my middle finger? Yup, that's from writing so much as a kid because we didn't have computers. I remember writing an entire 15-page research paper by hand my Freshman year in high school. And college applications? What a pain! There was no such thing as online submissions. I remember thinking that I was smart by typing up my applications on a type writer in my counselor's office. Anyway, the point is kids these days don't have to write by hand anymore. But I can't help but wonder if kids still pass notes in class, or do they just text each other? And do they even write letters to their pen pals anymore, or do they just email? Do they have to learn cursive? Oh what must their handwriting look like? I used to be graded on penmanship! So many questions, but one thing is for sure - kids these days will always have a future as hand models...that is, if they don't get bumps on their thumbs from texting so much.

Terrific blog, Yue! I also have an aberrant bone growth in the exact same spot on my left middle finger (by the way, go lefties!), but not quite as pronounced -- clearly you got much better grades in high school than I did. I remember what an absolute drag it was writing research papers long hand in high school...then rewriting the entire thing again for your second draft...then yet again for your final draft! And of course, the stupid teacher would mark all over each one in red pen, so you couldn't try to turn the same draft in twice. Oh, the wrist cramps!
Not to mention math...as a lefty, you were probably also prone to the dreaded "silverpaw" -- the side of your hand and pinkie shining with a heavy coat of graphite caused by constantly dragging your left hand through whatever algebra equation you just wrote out.
I thought I had died and gone to heaven in college when my parents got a station wagon-sized PC (a 386, I think.) I could TYPE a draft in WordPerfect, save it onto a 5.25 inch floppy disk (remember when they actually were floppy?) and not have to retype the entire thing on my next draft. Then, I could print it out on my dot-matrix printer, which if you squinted almost looked like it came from a typewriter, tear off the sprocket holes on the side, and I was good to go.
Ahh, good times.

Hahaha, I love it, a station wagon-sized PC. Those belong to museums now! But unfortunately, I cannot join the club for lefties. I had to twist my right hand to take this pic. I know, I am an imposter!

You should see my fingers sometime Yue, twisted from birth. And I'm convinced this is because Mrs. Brown in the 5th Grade grabbed my hand one day as was writing and yelled at me one morning to "loosen up your grip or you'll never write clearly!"
