FiOS Review on Computer Zen

scott_hanselman.jpg Scott Hanselman has put together an excellent FiOS TV review and photo gallery on his tech blog, Computer Zen.

Comparing the picture quality of FiOS High-Definition channels with his old provider, Scott says, "I can say that I had Comcast Cable for 10 years, the last 4 with High-Def and that Verizon's FIOs High-Def streams seem to have fewer artifacts when viewed on the same TV."

Regarding Standard Definition channels, he says, "One thing I noticed was that Standard Definition television, like Jon Stewart on Comedy Central looks MUCH clearer than Cable. Like, I literally said, "wow." There is NO ghosting. This is the first TV experience I've ever had in a my adult life without ghosting on some channel somewhere."

While he calls the current On-Demand selection "meager at best," more VoD selections are hitting FiOS areas this year, including HD VoD, and he does enjoy the easy-to-navigate, "AppleTV-like interface," which he says will score a high "WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor)."

A couple more notable facts about this Portland-area blogger: like Jake Irving, one of the stars of Episode 3, he is also a diabetic, and must use an insulin pump. Scott created the first PalmPilot Diabetes Management System, not unlike the device Jake now uses to monitor his glucose levels. And he's trying to raise $50,000 for diabetes research -- if you'd like to help him in his quest, go to http://www.hanselman.com/fightdiabetes.

I have had fios tv since last summer. This week they installed the new giude and it SUCKs. It its too big it makes the picture small while you are looking to see what is on next. It also only lets you see 1 1.2 hours of time. You cannot delete the channels you Never watch from the guide list. It jumps 1 hours at a time thru the guide making it hard to record on the 1/2 hour marks. They seem to be promoting the channel logo more then anything. Lots of dead space on the screen. WANT OLD PROGRAMMING GUIDE BACK OR THE CHOICE if not they are as bad as comcast

Thanks for the honest feedback, Mark. The reviews I've read so far of the new IMG have been overwhelmingly positive, although several have admitted the new interface can take some getting used to. You're also not the first person to write about wanting to delete unwatched channels.

For what it's worth, I'll pass your comments along to the folks I know personally at Verizon, who listen and take feedback like yours very seriously.

You have a nice day, too!

It would be nice to have the channel guide use the FULL WIDTH of the large 16:9 HD screen.
