60,000 LEDs Synched to Music!

Dec 12, 2007

Yowza! And I'm impressed with myself when I manage to untangle a string of lights...

The Lindsay family of Thornhill, Ontario, really knows how to rock the holidays, with their annual Lindsay Lights show. Over 60,000 LED lights are all synchronized to music, which is broadcast on an FM signal to the immediate area around the house. The whole show is completely automated and controlled by a single PC. The website has some pretty detailed background on how it all works (just a heads-up to you ambitious do-it-yourselfers out there, though: these guys are engineers.)

Over the years, the show has grown into quite a community event, with friends, neighbors and sponsors pitching in. So far, the Lindsay Lights have raised over $42,000 for local charities.

This video shows last year's show -- according to their blog, they'll also be featuring a streaming live webcam this year. Kudos to the Lindsay family for using technology in such an inventive and positive way!
