You've seen the show, and now you can't get the incredibly catchy theme song out of your head. You've been singing it merrily at work, but your high-pitched warble just ain't doing justice to those feather-light harmonies. And you can't even really describe the sound to the guy in the next cubicle, because it's sorta jazzy but not exactly, and it's got...what is that, anyway, a ukulele?
Well, friends, I'm here to help you set the record straight: the genre is known as "Ka-Chunk," the band that delivers it is The Polyjesters, and you can get the mp3 right here:
(Right-click, or ctrl + click on Macs, to save song to desktop. Then add to your MP3 player and let the guy at work hear it, so you don't have to sing it to him a cappella any more.)
This Canadian four-piece mixes swing, folk, gypsy jazz, country and bluegrass into a distinctive sound they call "Ka-Chunk," which they describe as "a word that represents the sound of a Ukulele being strummed in a mad fury to push a small orchestra into the utopia of swing." Well said, guys!
The Polyjesters have several albums out, and you can listen to some more samples of their work at polyjesters.com, including clever originals and snappy covers of old standards like "Over the Rainbow" and "Sweet Georgia Brown." I also really dig their version of "It Don't Mean A Thing," in which the ukulele and bass player channel their Dad, who's in turn channeling Louis Armstrong. Good stuff, check it out!
