Congrats, Zaharko Family!

New My Home 2.0 Stars

Oct 25, 2007

And then there were five... wait, make that eleven.

Our fifth family chosen to star in the show is made up of 11 people altogether -- Christine and Jay Zaharko, and their nine children:

  • Michael, 17 years old
  • Elizabeth, 16
  • Emily, 14
  • Samuel, 13
  • Margaret, 11
  • Lucy, 9
  • Ruth, 7
  • Timothy, 4
  • David, 6 months

The Zaharkos live in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh. The family has one very small TV and one computer that everyone must share. Doing homework, playing web games, emailing and researching the web is not easy, as everyone struggles to stake a claim on the computer. Emily is a special needs child and has occasional episodes -- watching High School Musical is the only thing that calms her down. So, needless to say, personal TV time is rare for the rest of the family.

Jay is a product manager for a chemical company who could potentially work from home, but he has no home office. Christine stays at home but works on weekends as an RN -- her only time away, when Jay watches the kids. Besides of course being physically close (2-3 kids per bedroom!), the Zaharkos are a close-knit, spiritual family with a cooperative, team-based attitude. Each kid has a role in the family to help out -- with 11 outfits in the laundry and up to 33 sets of dirty dishes every day, there's no room for slackers!

Michael and Sam love games and would love to have an Xbox 360 to play with all their friends. Elizabeth would love to have movie nights with her girlfriends. And battle-free computer time would be great for everyone.

Techno-Gurus, you've really got your work cut out for you this time! Congrats to the Zaharko Family -- if you'd like to congratulate all 11 of them yourself in person, leave November 17 open on your calendar and come down to the big block party!

Wow is right! They're a really great family, and we're having a lot of laughs so far today. I think even a little nudge toward the 21st century would help them out a lot. Can't wait to see how the Gurus hook them up!

congrats loved ones! Gurus, you may never want to leave this loving bunch. Thank you, Verizon, for being so kind to this wonderful family.

Ahh, so it's Aunt Martha -- I was wondering how you got the inside scoop before I even posted about the family! :)

You're right -- I think Christine, Jay and the gang might actually have to kick the Gurus out after the shoot wraps today.

Oh wow! (I'm their cousin, by the way. "inside scoop" aunt martha is my mommy) I've never seen these guys so happy (except when another kid is born, but after 9 thats old news...) and excited. When i visited them, it was all smiles smiles smiles. There has never been a family that has deserved this so much! Yay for them! Have fun, you guru people. You've never met a more fun and insane family. (insane in a good way)

Congrats from Michigan! Hey, I've been calling all day... anybody going to answer that phone? I'm so happy for you guys. Love, Aunt Amy

Welcome, Aunt Amy! This is so cool, I feel like I'm part of the family already.

I think they may actually have the ringer turned off because they're shooting inside the house -- those fancy microphones can practically pick up the sound of a pin dropping. There was a kid zooming up and down the street on a motorized scooter a little while ago that was driving the sound guy a little nutty.

I'll tell the superstars to give you a holler when they're done with their close-ups, though, Amy. ;)

Thanks to everyone for checking in with their nice comments. The Zaharkos want to publicly thank everyone who is involved with this project. We had a blast on "Day 1" and are looking forward to more fun in a couple of weeks. Everyone has been fantastic.

On behalf of all the crew, let me say that you are very welcome, Jay.

We're all really excited to get back to your house and start cranking on the upgrade. We were actually just talking about your family at lunch today on the Buckley shoot, wondering how the whole "moving into the My Home 2.0 RV" bit is going to work with 11 people...we might have to get a whole fleet of 'em!

By the way, have you seen the poll on the Tech Buzz forum? There seems to be some debate on whose block party will be the rockin-est. ;)

  22. Jay Says:

    Nov 02, 2007 7:17 pm

II know I am biased, but I think our Block Party will stack up (bad block pun) as the best. The RV situation causes laughter every time I mention it to someone. See you all in a couple of weeks.

Anyway, enjoy the ride. We could not be happier for you. The idea of the "Zaharko Eleven" living in the RV for three days is a hoot. We cannot wait to see the results and hang out with the masses at the block party. Last, but not least, Happy Birthday Emily! You rock, Em. Love you all.

I was thrilled to learn that the Zaharkos were chosen to be a Verizon 2.0 family! I had the great pleasure of working with the Zaharkos to find their new home on Concord Drive (they needed more bedrooms!). Being the 2nd oldest of eight, I immediately felt at home with Jay, Christine and all of the children. I loved every moment I spent with them and was totally impressed by the loving, respectful and joyful atmosphere that permeates their family life under all circumstances. They are truly a special family derserving of all good things that come to them. I started out as their Realtor and became a friend...lucky me Can't wait to see them on Saturday! Thanks Verizon...great choice!
